On her arrival in Ireland in 1993 Heike began making baskets and was immediately captivated by this ancient craft.
Heike works mainly with willow as it is a native, strong, sustainable and long lasting material that she can grow herself. Heike is mostly self-taught. Over the years she also attended many courses given by irish and international makers.
Heike started her own business, Baurnafea WillowWorks, in 1996 selling baskets and garden structures at craft fairs, markets and exhibitions.
Every winter Heike harvests many varieties of willow on her farm that are grown organically. After a few month they are ready to be woven into baskets, lampshades and sculptural pieces. Occasionally she adds other natural materials such as dogwood, rush or straw to her creations.
Heike works part-time as a basketmaking tutor for Kilkenny/Carlow ETB, enjoys teaching day courses and night classes and runs a weekly therapeutic basketry workshop for adults with intellectual disabilities.
